As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, many people look forward to summer vacations, beach days, backyard barbecues, and spending more time outdoors. Yet for many, the arrival of summer also brings an unwelcome increase in body image concerns.
From advertisements and diet companies promoting “summer body” transformations to social media feeds filled with carefully curated vacation photos, it can feel as though we’re constantly being reminded that our bodies should look a certain way before we’re allowed to fully enjoy the summer season. This messaging can be especially challenging for those working to heal their relationship with food and their body.
The truth is, your body does not need to change to deserve joy, connection, or sunshine.
We’ve grown up in a society that places tremendous value on appearance. We are often taught both directly and indirectly that thinner is better, that our worth is tied to our size, and that changing our bodies will bring happiness and more confidence.
These messages are powerful because they are everywhere. But just because these messages are everywhere doesn’t make them true.
Healing often begins by noticing these messages rather than automatically believing them. Ask yourself:
Awareness creates space for new perspectives.
One of the greatest costs of body dissatisfaction is how much life it asks us to postpone.
We tell ourselves:
Unfortunately, those goalposts often continue to move. This meaning, there will always be something holding you back from living authentically and in the moment if you are always focused on needing to change something about your appearance.
Summer memories are created through laughter, relationships, adventure, and presence not by achieving a particular body size.
Many people believe they need to love every part of their body before they can experience peace. But healing doesn’t require constant body positivity.
Sometimes a more realistic goal is body respect or body neutrality.
Body respect might look like:
Something I always love to tell my clients is- “you don’t have to love your body to respect and care for it”. As a human we are worthy of respect (especially from ourselves) despite what our bodies look like.
The messages we consume influence how we feel.
If certain social media accounts leave you feeling inadequate or trigger comparison, consider unfollowing or muting them. Instead, seek out voices that celebrate body diversity, recovery, authenticity, and self-compassion.
Similarly, if conversations with friends or family consistently revolve around dieting, weight, or appearance, it’s okay to set gentle boundaries or redirect the conversation.
Protecting your peace is part of protecting your well-being and self- growth.
You deserve to swim in the ocean.
You deserve to wear clothes that keep you cool.
You deserve to eat ice cream with friends.
You deserve to celebrate, travel, laugh, rest, and make memories.
Not because you’ve earned it.
Simply because you’re human.
Summer is far too short to spend it at war with your body.
As you move through this season, I encourage you to ask yourself one simple question:
If my body wasn’t the focus today, what would I want to experience instead?
Perhaps it’s watching the sunset, playing with your children, taking a walk with a friend, reading by the pool, or enjoying a meal without guilt.
Those are the moments that stay with us not the number on a scale or the size on a clothing tag. I can promise you on this one.
Healing isn’t about having the “perfect summer body.” It’s about creating a life that feels fuller, richer, and more connected than the constant pursuit of changing your body.
This summer, may you give yourself permission to show up exactly as you are. Remember, every body is a summer body.
Feeling seen but you don’t know where to start? If the start of the summer feels heavy or brings up pressure around food, body image, or perfection, you don’t have to navigate that alone. Therapy can be a space to slow down and approach this season with more compassion.
